Another Subcontinent Presents: Two Translations by Moazzam Sheikh

Another Subcontinent continues our translation series with translations from Punjabi by Moazzam Sheikh of stories by contemporary Pakistani writers, Nadir Ali and Zubair Ahmed. These translations will be the featured presentations on the site till June 4, 2007. These stories take the number of South Asian languages from which we have presented translations to three: Hindi, Urdu, and now Punjabi (see the archive of written features for links to the others). We expect to publish translations from other South Asian languages as well in the near future, and invite translators working in other languages (or these for that matter) to contact us for possible publication. We would be particularly interested in translations from languages less prominently featured in English translation. We also invite original writing in South Asian languages other than English. About Nadir Ali and Zubair Ahmed

Nadir Ali began his artistic career in the mid 1970s by writing Punjabi poetry. Three collections of his short stories have been published so far, and his latest titled Kahani Praga, from which the current story is taken, was given the Waris Shah Memorial award in 2005.

Zubair Ahmed teaches English Literature at Islamia College, Lahore. He has one collection of poetry and one collection of short stories published to date. The translated story is from the collection of the same name, Meinh, Boohay te BaariaN. He also writes a regular column for wichaar.com, a Punjabi language online journal.

About Moazzam Sheikh

Moazzam Sheikh was born in Lahore. He studied business, film and library science and is currently a librarian in the Art/Music/Recreation department at the San Francisco public library. In addition, he teaches at City College of San Francisco, writes fiction, and translates fiction from Urdu/Hindi/Punjabi/English. His latest work of translation is Stories of Intizar Husain (Katha). He has also edited a collection of stories, A Letter from India: Contemporary Pakistani Short Stories (Penguin).

Moazzam is one of the founding members of Another Subcontinent.

Another Subcontinent published "The Wind Blew it All Away", Moazzam's translation of Ikramullah's Urdu short story, "Le Gayi Pavan Ura", in February 2006.
