About Ammini Ramachandran



Ammini Ramachandran was born in Kerala, India and moved to the United States in 1971. A chemistry graduate from Kerala University, she studied finance in the United States and received her MBA from Southern Methodist University in Dallas. She was a financial analyst in international banking until 2001. After Sep 11, 2001, she took early retirement and decided to pursue her hobby, writing. Her articles have appeared in Malayalam magazines published in Kerala. Started as a family journal for her sons, nieces, and nephews, her writings evolved into a web site -- peppertrail.com -- and later to a book Grains, Greens, and Grated Coconuts: Recipes and Remembrances of a Vegetarian Legacy (available from iUniverse in early 2007). She writes a column on spices for www.sallys-place.com, a premier Web site for food, beverages, and travel. Her recipes and articles have appeared in leitesculinaria.com, The Providence Journal, Flavor & Fortune, and Food History Primer.

Ammini is also a very active member of the Another Subcontinent community and we are proud to be able to feature here both an excerpt from the introduction to her book, as well as a few recipes from it.
