A newly married girl comming to chennai for the first time. she decided to make Keerai for her husband. and she is going to the market and asked the kadakaramma by taking some keerai in her hand "eppadimma Keerai". she said "naan nallaththan keeran. nee eppadi keerai"? Did anyone translate this in the end, btw? (Ed: Makes it worse when the extreme digression is something you can't even understand!) Thanks, Kavitha!
I can imagine the confusion if someone comes to Singapore and says "I want some chai" (chye, pronounced "chai" - general Chinese term for green leafy vegetable; chai - Hindi word for tea). Would people like photos and names of green vegetables available here? I don't mind posting as and when I make market excursions. Ok, I got snaps of some 7 varieties. They don't look as nice as Kavitha's lovely pics, for reasons that I shall not digress into. I am figuring out how to post them. I must warn you, Seeker, that even as I snapped them, I got mixed up between varieties, and I have no idea if the snaps will help you differentiate. I was helpfully told that Ara is never sold with roots and Mola is. They pronounced it Mola, btw, not Mula. Are these the same or different varieties?
eta : more helpful hints (or so she thinks). Siru, Ara and Mola keerai - the leaves look v similar in shape. Except Siru is much smaller and finer looking, Mola is the biggest and Ara is sold w/o roots, so apparently that is how to distinguish. eta2 : must say the paruppu keerai that I snapped looks nothing like what is in Kavitha's pic. Wonder if confusion is going to reduce or increase with all this. Acchha I got snaps for ara/siru/mola/mendhiya/paruppu/delhi palak (!) - but the cable that lets me upload them to the computer is missing. After seeing the wonderbar snaps from Kavitha, I am not sure if it is worth posting them - though there are some variations - the mola keerai here has no purple tinge, the paruppu keerai looks very different. Regional variations?

Dear Xena, do post your keerais. I do not know what is ara keerai.
We do not get ventaya keerai in Malaysia. Do also post your paruppu keerai. I am yet to get ahgathi keerai and valarai keerai. Its going to be keerai virunthu for a week. Thanks. Note: I might be wrong in the english names please correct me if I am wrong. This post has been edited by Kavitha Ravi: Jul 12 2007, 09:13 PM |

I must say your keerais look way more appetizing than mine, which look a tad wilted. Ara - also called arai, I suspect - seems to be the same family as siru and mola, but falls in the middle in size. I wonder why they don't give it with the roots - and whether that is just a local practice. (My coco insisted I take a snap with 4 leaves in a row on a paper, like a botany chart, so that the relative size is obvious - but I am sure this is just a general thing and there may be huge siru leaves and small mola leaves). I was told that unlike the other keerais, ara keerai is not to be cooked with daal, only sour stuff like tamarind and tomatos - all this is for the benefit of you keerai lovers - me, I will stick to Delhi palak (which I think is same as passalai keerai). Must say that my knowledge of keerais has gone up zillionfold because of Seeker/WF's mischievous whistle. -------------------- What the bandar-log think now the jungle will think later

thanks, kavitha! really appreciate this. JP-ji, now pliss to add the saddi dilli naam too of the above! Its great to see the pictures of these greens after so long This one looks like 'muglai' . may be the same genus, since u call it the 'Black' nightshade, i am assuming the fruits turn black on ripening. in the one i know, the green fruits turn red and almost look like mini tomatoes. the seeds resemble tomato seeds too. This is called Black Nightshade or Manathakkali Keerai.. Well I am going to the night market, hope to buy more varities Appuram enna keerai party taan. ![]() These three come under 'chaulai'. the last one is called the 'lal chaulai'. Kavitha - thanks a lot ( how is thavassa muranga keerai different from the plain murangakeerai?) and Xena am looking forward to seeing araikeerai added to this lot! Mmm. I should go and buy some greens today - says Seeker frying an alloo tikki.

*** Oh ho, the three star keerai, one of my old favorites! Thanks for the wonderful pictures, Xena. Yes, your paruppu keerai is very different from Kavitha's ( I don't she has a photo up - it just looks like an illustration from somewhere). I actually had no idea about paruppu keerai - I wonder what it is called in other languages. And is paalak always Delhi paalak? -------------------- my god, the butter!

Aiyyyo - I thought I'd post another paalak picture! Oh ho, the three star keerai, one of my old favorites! Yup, key ingredient in inferior chocolates I actually had no idea about paruppu keerai - I wonder what it is called in other languages. And is paalak always Delhi paalak? Apparently there are two pasalai varieties - the one from Delhi is called - yes! Delhi Paalak. The local one is has much more spongey leaves. No idea about the paruppu names Everything I never wanted to know about spinach ....
