oh, that was so much fun. is the fun officially over? hope not since it's still continuing at my end. one version of the error message (500): QUOTE Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@anothersubcontinent.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request -------------------- |

I've been having problems for the last few days, thought it was my internet connection, but as my techie support person pointed out, other sites are fine, but only AS takes ages to load. Must be getting a lot of traffic, he said, sagely, so server is under pressure - has that happened? And is that why it is slow?

from our hosting service:
QUOTE We are currently experiencing some networking difficulties which is causing parts of our network to be inaccessible. This is affecting everyone in a random manner. We are working hard to fix the problem right now and will have an update for you soon. this was posted 2.5 hours ago. seems to still be intermittent. for a while even their emergency status update site was down.... -------------------- yeh sab kya ho raha hai, beta duryodhan? arnab@anothersubcontinent.com |

There's something charming about going to sleep when the connection to AS hangs in suspended animation, teasing, will I? won't I? and then waking up to find it full of zip. Like starting a new year at school with fresh new books all crisply covered.

these problems don't seem to have gone away yet. i gave up trying to connect last night. this morning a-s seems to be fine, but other sites on dreamhost (our service provider) seem erratic. more worryingly, their emergency update page isn't loading! so, be prepared for more annoyance today.

It seems the problem you mentioned is applicable to you overseas fellows only.....Here in India (especially in Maharashtra) things are running superbly as far as connections and speed are concerned. However since Thursday here we are having great commotion over NOKIA's batteries....the bursting of BL 5C batteries while charging/heating have created a havoc all over the country and a sudden rush to vendors for immediate replacement of faulty-battery was unprecedented. The NOKIA immediately has announced throughout the world that it is going to replace more than 40 million defective batteries of their various Mobile models. But, of course, this has nothing to do with connection and server etc. which is prime object of this thread. |

sorry all, for the long string of outages yesterday. not that we had anything to do with it, but it must have been very frustrating for those trying to log in and then having logged in, trying to post.
hopefully it is all better now. those of you on the announcements list should have received an email last evening with a (non) update. i don't know when the last time was that the announcements list was updated, so if you aren't on it, please look for an email invitation to join it in the next few hours. you'll have to click on a link to explicitly subscribe to that list. -------------------- yeh sab kya ho raha hai, beta duryodhan? arnab@anothersubcontinent.com |

i am sorry for two things: 1) the prolonged site outage last evening (u.s time) and morning (subcontinent time), and 2) for taking so long to acknowledge that it happened and to apologize for it.
i had reported the problem to our hosting company when i first saw it* and then went offline for 5 or 6 hours assuming they would fix it. but they didn't. then it turned out that the problem was with some code i had written into the site's directories when we first launched which contained errors that were tolerated by the previous version of the server software but not the current version which we were upgraded to recently. i fixed those problems this morning, and so we should have been back to normal all day, and will hopefully remain that way. *with hibiscus still on hiatus i don't get notified of site problems as quickly as i used to. so you can blame her if you prefer. -------------------- yeh sab kya ho raha hai, beta duryodhan? arnab@anothersubcontinent.com |
