Edited to remove mistake.
The song that initially came to mind wasn't his. I encourage the moderator to remove this now meaningless post. This post has been edited by dieresis: May 6 2006, 02:06 PM |

Mere mehboob tujhe meri mohabbat ki kasam, phir mujhe nargisi aankhon ka sahaara de de, mera khoya hua rangeen nazaara de de...
Koi saagar dil ko behlaata nahin, bekhudi mein bhi qaraar aata nahin... Do sitaaron ka zameen par hai milan aaj ki raat... Songs from Mughal-e-Azam and Baiju Bawra. Madhuban mein Radhika naache re... Many more! Take your pick. -------------------- |

Okay, my first favourites-of-Naushad playlist, from the top of my head (Later will sit down and make other ones):
1. Mohe panghat pe nandlal chhed gayo re (Lata, Mughaleazam) 2. Tere husn ki kya tareef karoon (Lata-Rafi, Leader) 3. Too kahe agar jeevan bhar main geet sunata jaaon (Mukesh, Andaz) 4. Hamare dil se na jana, dhoka na khana (Lata, Uran Khatola) 5. Tere pyaar mein dildar jo hai mera haalezaar (Lata, Mere Mehboob) 6. Nain lad jaihen to manwama kasak hoi bekari (Rafi, Gunga-Jumna) 7. Jhoole men pawan ke aayi bahar (Lata-Rafi, Baiju Bawra) 8. Afsana likh Rahi hoon, dil-e-beqaraar ka (Uma Devi, dont know film) 9. Gaadi wale gaadi dhire haak re (Rafi-Shamshad, Mother India) 10. Awaaz de kahaan hai (Shyam-Suraiya, don't know film) -------------------- I'd rather have an orchestra in front of me, than a helicopter behind.

Oh isnt her voice lovely?
Am listening to Rum jhum barase badarwa masta hawaye aayi piya ghar aaja... sigh! Ankhiyaan milake is the 3rd song after this song. Yesterday we went to Devon- our monthly indian shopping. We went to a music shop and my husband said to the guy at the counter- "Aaj Naushad saab ke kaafi CDs bike honge" and the guy said "kyon"? So we told him and he was so stricken and he called out to the other young guy (the one with Amir's DilChahtaHai hair cut and FUBU clothes) who said "Haan janta hoon, woh to boodha tha" -------------------- |

Somehow I associate Naushad and Dilip Kumar in my mind, and as I thought about it, so many songs. Dilip Kumar is one of the few actors who actually seems to be singing the songs, no? He has very good musical sense.
Aaj ki Raat mere dil ki salaami lele (Ram aur Shyam): the way this song begins, in the opening lines he furrows his brow and moves his head just right, as if he were trying to reach the upper notes. Koi sagar dil ko behelata nahi (Dil Diya Dard Liya?) Nain lad jaihen (Gunga Jumna) Madhuban mein radhika nache re (Kohinoor) Tere husn ki kya tareef (Leader) Gaaye ja geet milan ke tu apni lagan ke (Mela) Tu kahe agar (Andaz) Mughal-e-Azam (although Dilip Kumar himself doesn't have any great songs on him in this film) Mohabbat ki rahon mein chalna sambhalke, and O door ke musafir (Uran Khatola) -------------------- I'd rather have an orchestra in front of me, than a helicopter behind.

i just popped in tape 2 of the rpg golden collection (has this been released on cd? i didn't see it in delhi this trip).
rafi is wailing on "o duniya ke rakhwale". the vocal is a little too dramatic for my taste but the music is so beautiful and the instruments so perfectly balanced. -------------------- yeh sab kya ho raha hai, beta duryodhan? arnab@anothersubcontinent.com |

8. Afsana likh Rahi hoon, dil-e-beqaraar ka (Uma Devi, dont know film) 10. Awaaz de kahaan hai (Shyam-Suraiya, don't know film) "dard" "anmol ghadi" no, i don't know this stuff off the top of my head--looking at the sleeve on tape 1 of the golden collection. edit: "chandan ka palna" just finished--another lovely song (how many hemant-lata duets are there?). lata just got started on "na milta gham to". lata's voice was so beautiful when she was young--but naushad really got the best out of her, no? I'm so glad he chose Hemanta for that duet. All the other songs from that film are by Rafi. One of them "mehelon mein rehenewale hamein tere dar se kya" is beautiful.
I have never warmed to "duniya ke rakhwale" or "man tarpat hari darshan ko aaj". very forced, both the songs. -------------------- I'd rather have an orchestra in front of me, than a helicopter behind.

does anyone know where naushad "borrowed" the rhythmic chanting thing at the start of "roop ki dushman" from. captain beefheart of all people has the same thing in "abba zaba" on his album "safe as milk" (which came out in the late 60s). the only references i could find to "abba zaba" suggest that elements of it are taken from west african music, so i am assuming both borrowed it independently from some west african source--unless captain beefheart was listening to naushad! unfortunately, the "inspired film songs" site linked to in the pinned links thread in this forum seems to be defunct.

No no, I like the composition, the tunes and the background music (I love Naushad's interludes and the little "link" tunes from one line to the other that he does, sometimes through a chorus), but I was referring to the singing here.

shamshad begum and rafi singing "kaise baje dil ka sitar". wonderful, and underlines that as celebrated naushad is for marrying indian classical structures to film music, he is underrated for his interpolation of western style orchestration/arrangements. on my next trip home i'm going to have to buy many of the full soundtracks of these late 40s, early 50s movies that he directed the music of.
also, after about 1948 it seems like there are very few songs composed by him that had lyrics by anyone other than shakeel badayuni. -------------------- yeh sab kya ho raha hai, beta duryodhan? arnab@anothersubcontinent.com |

Moazzam, it was my mistake above: I had typed "tu mera chand" by Shyam-Suraiya and Awaaz de kahan hai by Noor Jehan-Surendra, but in deleting the earlier song from my playlist I mixed up the singers. Awaz de is on every Naushad "Best of" collection I am aware of.
I don't know what has changed where, but I probably need better glasses! -------------------- I'd rather have an orchestra in front of me, than a helicopter behind.

Yes. Esp. the serious use of the piano (rather than just in the beginning of the song, where the hero dramatically crashes his fingers on the keys) and of choruses (like in "o door ke musafir"). His use of the chorus is very different from Salil C's, and also very versatile, from something like "o door ke musafir" in Uran Khatola to "matwala jiya dole piya" in Mother India to "allah bachaye naujwanon se" in Mere Mehboob. -------------------- I'd rather have an orchestra in front of me, than a helicopter behind.

ooooh the uran khatola songs: hamare dil se na jaana dhokha na khaana duniya bade beimaaan
and mera salaam leja. and i love this one from dastaan - rafi suraiya - waltz rhythm - ta ra rum pum - yeh sawan rut hum aur tum... the verse is very pretty : aankhon mein tum leke pyaar aa gaye gulshan mein banke bahar aa gaye dekho woh kaliyon ko ho gayi hasi baadal ki chaaye mein naache khushi tu hai to phir kya hai gum, tara rum pum ta ra reeee ta ra reeee. reading this comment - whether naushad limited himself to just a few singers... and a tribute anmol ghadi has some great suraiya songs, though of course it is noorjehan's movie all the way jawan hai mohabbat mere bachpan ke saathi mujhe bhool na jaana i love the duet in dillagi with shyam "tu mera chand mai teri chandni" - recently found a suraiya karaoke cd with this song in it - now my sisters and i freak out "saath hi jeena saath hi marna ulfat ki hai reeth haaaaaa ulfat ki hai reet, pyaar ki murli har dam gaye teri lagan ke geet ---- ooooo oooooo ooooo" naushad was also a technical innovator QUOTE But all his musical hits notwithstanding, Naushad was also a man of great technical knowledge and capable of much innovation. He was the first to introduce sound mixing and the separate recording of voice and music tracks in playback singing which he did with Shahjehan getting Saigal to record separately on a different track and having the music on another track. Naushad was also the first to combine the flute and the clarinet, the sitar and mandolin. He also introduced the accordion to Hindi film music and was among the first to concentrate on background music to extend characters' moods and dialogues through music. But perhaps Naushad's greatest contribution was to bring Indian classical music into the film medium and what's more make them extremely accessible to the layman in films like Baiju Bawra(1952) and Mughal-e-Azam (1960). some years ago, when noorjehan visited india, she sang "awaaz de kahaan hai" - it was wonderful - watched it on tv. here's my naushad songs: door koyi gaye dhun ye sunaye tere bin chaliya re gaye jaa geet milan ki tu apne lagan ke sajan ghar jaana hai hum aaj kahin dil kho baithe madhuban mein radhika milte hi aankhen dil hua diwana kisika na milta gham to barbadi ke afsane kahan jaayen phir teri kahani yaad ayi phir tera fasana yaad aya yeh pyaar ki baaten yeh safar bhool na jaana teri mehfil mein kismat aazmakar ham bhi dekhenge |

Arrey, no problem.
The "chandan ka palna" song has been in my head since yesterday. I love "tere mehfil mein qismat aazmaakar hum bhi dekhenge" Lekha, isn't "hamare dil se na jaana" beautiful? The way she says "dhoka na khana, duniya badi beimaan". Also "more saiyan ji" and "mohabbat ki rahon mein chalna sambhalke" Mere Mehboob: each one is a masterpiece: Rafi's "aye husn zara jaag tujhe ishq jagaaye", "mere mehboob mein kya nahin" Also "do hanson ka joda" and "o chhalia re chhalia re man me hamaar najar tori bas gayi" and of course "dhoondo dhoondo re sajana" from Gunga Jumna: do you like "dhoondo" better or "na manu dagabaj tori"? -------------------- I'd rather have an orchestra in front of me, than a helicopter behind.

I've been listening to Allah bachaye naujawanon se from Mere Mehboob. I love the way he contrasts the main tune sung by Lata to that of the chorus. I think the song is based on Bhairavi, am I right?
The final stanza "soz-e-mohabbat kya hai itna na jaane koi" is so beautiful, esp. the short alaaps at the end. Accha, is it my imagination or was there one really woman in hindi song choruses of this time with a very powerful voice? I feel I recognize it in so many songs (including this one). Who knows who that was. -------------------- I'd rather have an orchestra in front of me, than a helicopter behind.

One of my Naushad fav is 'Mere Mehboob'. As Fran says "each one is a masterpiece". I like the film too. Esp the urduish dialogues.
Recently I saw 'Andaz'. Was surprised by fol. observations 1. Only one Rafi song, many Mukesh songs 2. Rafi sings for Raj Kapoor and Mukesh sings for Dilip Kumar 3. Dilip is a singer in the film, and RK is not 4. All this despite Rafi being Naushad's fav. Ok, it was 1949 (and missed out 'Best of xx' series) and may be that time Mukesh was a better known singer than Rafi! -------------------- |

after eating at surati farsan mart last week i bought a couple of naushad cd's from the music store next door. one with "anmol ghadi" and "anokhi ada" and the other with "shabab" and "baiju bawra". have been listening to the first one--just wonderful stuff and inspired some questions/thoughts that i will start new threads about.
