Amazing, amazing! Youtube wonders never cease. Someone's put upa whole bunch of songs from old Pakistani Urdu and Punjabi films.

Here's the original film versionof "Pyar Bhare Do Sharmiley Nain" by Mehdi Hassan. I believe the actress in the clip was Bengali, from erstwhile East Pakistan. And she bears a striking resemblance to one of our own ASers over here :)!

Here's another absolute classic, "Rafta, rafta", again by Mehdi Hassan.

Here's a Noor Jehan Punjabi classic, "Sun Ve Bilori Ankh Waaleya". A cover version of the song was released by another singer recently.

There's lots more, songs featuring Pakistani Punjabi superstar Sultan Rahi, old-time cutie and tragic figure of Pakistani Urdu films Waheed Murad, some TV performances of Noorjehan (she used as much makeup in the B&W era as colour), etc.

swaaaaaaaaaatiiii! you are killing me! that video was just too funny. what the heck was going on in that song?! i know that zero-acting-talent people have the right to star in movies and quiver their bottom lips near pianos, but this was in a league of its own! the actress is indeed from BD-- i cant remember her name, but she later put of a lot of weight and wore a really bad wig, which is required for all BD actresses to play college girl roles.

i really hope you didnt mean that i look like the piano-chick. hai allah! i will wear a beehive and take a picture next to a piano immediately, just to prove you wrong.

edit to add: if i'm not wrong, the actress in the clip is suchanda:

here's a picture of her in a wig.

No, no, that's not her at all. The one in the song is called Shabnum, and she acted in numerous Pakistani films.

Quote

Shabnum was Pakistan's most successful Urdu film heroine. She was born as Jharna Devi - a Hindu born Bengali actress, who converted to Christianity after she married prominent musician Robin Ghosh.
Shabnum is the record holder of the largest number of super hit Urdu films in Pakistan.

.................................

Shabnum stared her film career in Bengali films in Dhaka. She was introduced to Urdu films in film Chanda in 1962. Her first film in West Pakistan was Samundar in 1968. Andleeb (1969) was her first mega hit film. She got breakthrough as top actress from film Dosti in 1971. She appeared in three Punjabi films in the end of her film career but did not succeeded, then she left Pakistan to live in her native country Bangladesh.

She does have a whole nyakaami thing going on with the quivering lower lip and fluttering eyes (she can't help it, she was born Bong). And yes I jest, I jest! I wasn't trying to imply that all that separates you from full-on nyakaami is a beehive. Though in the interests of research, let's have the beehive and piano picture :)!!

guys, this clip is not a song but it is too late and i just came across it. it is to showcase a great pakistani male character actor, alla'udin, a powerful actor, given the melodramatic style of indo/pak filmmaking idiom:

"roshni bhi hoti to meray liye andhera hi tha betay"
... tsk tsk.. all the painful scenes and sad emotions were etched on his face.. he did not even had to utter a word. the poor man was always put in some miserable and sad situation.

shabnum's mention upthread.. I had all the more respect for her acting talent before I saw some of her films... she had serious chest infection round the year, leading to chronic emphysema ... you got to see her when she was doing some climax super-emotional scene.. in the fit of an 'asthematic shock'..

"<hyperventilation>Javed.. tum ne <deep breath> meri mohabbat ka <suspended breath for few seconds> mazaaq bana diya.... <eyes about to shed blood.. quiverring lips> AAj se <rapid shallow breathing> hamaray tumharay <sigh>  rasstay alag.. <wheezing> hamesha ke liye <silence of the lamb.. :-P>

javed, the perfect son-of-a-gun, does not say a word and leaves the room, banging the door..  I bet in a hurry to call for an ambulance.
