Happy Diwali, everyone! Those who are in the lands where fireworks are permitted, wish you a safe festival! (In S'pore, only the government is allowed to set off fireworks. Serious.)

Happy Diwali to all!

Any reports? What did you do? (there are some mini reports in the food forum)

For Dhanteras, I got myself a wonderful chinese appetizer serving set (four porcelaine bowls of different shapes on rectangular wooden tray). Do you buy utensils for Diwali/Dhanteras too? We drew a tiny watercolour rangoli (it did not rain - expected this afternoon) and lit diyas. No fireworks here

warmest wishes to all for diwali smile.gif

am celebrating by going to see srk in person (gasp! drool! dead faint!) and then catching the first show of OSO (for the plebs that is). then this weekend there are fireworks, diwali dinner invites, puja with a friend, and then might be hosting a small diwali get together for some friends.

phd? what phd? what deadline?

Happy Diwali to all, to the ones who are celebrating and to the others who are just watching.

Here is a song that used to play on Diwali on radio a lot, a bit cheesy, but sweet nonetheless.

तबकामध्ये इथे तेवती निरांजनाच्या वाती
दिव्या-दिव्यांची ज्योत सांगते, तुझी न माझी प्रिती,

and here is some rangoli for the festive occasion.

Happy Deepavali!

Deepavali for us is on Narak Chaturdashi, which is today. Abhyang snaan and all. I really don't know how it works or why but it's always been Narak Chaturdashi for us.

I think it is the 9th for most other folks.

Happy diwali to everyone. We are heading out to dine and wine with friends which will be followed by some very amateurish gambling. Hopefully I'll make some latte money for the weekend.

One thing that seems to have caught on in Bombay over the last few years is the "Diwali pahAT" [Diwali dawn]. These are early morning concerts - typically starting at 6 am. In the past they used to be restricted to propah classical concerts. But nowadays they feature more popular music - often but not always - of Marathi songs.

I went for one on Friday and quite enjoyed it. Except the organizers were a bit rightwingish. A fair amount of time was spent decrying how Savarkar was treated badly etc. This lent an extra edge to the renditions of "Ne mazasee nay" and the final "Vande mataram".

I was unaware how much of contemporary Marathi poetry is deemed 'ghazals'.

Prasad Oke put in an appearance. He is an actor/director/singer and has been prominent on TV lately. He showed up in long 'permed' hair and cargo pants and an odd looking - for Bombay weather - windcheater type thing. Plus big white sneakers. But he turned out to be a swell guy and sang some nice songs (the bhajiwala's love song brought out cries of 'once more'). Plus his absolutely darling wife was dragged onto the stage where she sat uneasily for a while and then pleaded with her husband to be allowed to go back among the audience.

Ayyo Ajit..Your description of *rightwingish* organizers gave a feeling of NRM gaze being set on local cultural practices laugh.gif

I hope you are all having a great deal of fun.

Spare a thought for me sitting here in wet windy and miserable England, surrounded by tons of coursework that needs to be marked. sad.gif Could really do with some intellectual stimulation. Help!!!!!! Am soooooooooooo bored.

I thought NRM was quite common. These days the cultual ghusghori (invasive practices ??) of NRM's in Maharashtra is bothering so many of us (hahahha) that it has become a widely circulated word.

I'd have to get on the wagon first. At my height........ biggrin.gif

Actually I am more or less teetotal. I'm just sooooo bored. sad.gif If I didn't have this marking to do before tomorrow, I guess I wouldn't be sooooo bored. smile.gif
