This film/DVD will be released on December 3. Made by Atul Pethe. Language Marathi with English subtitles. Duration 45 Min.

Bahinabai Chaudhari (बहिणाबाई चौधरी) occupies a unique position in Marathi literature. As she worked at home and in the field, she expressed herself through her poems. It was an expression of both the small pleasures as well as deep pain as she braved many challenges of her life. This unlettered woman never posed as a poet. She lived for 71 years (1880- 1951). Her son, Sopandeo Chaudhari, transcribed her poems that she spoke in her everyday Khandeshi dialect. Her poetry is about the man, mind and mankind. She turned everyday things - like the hand grinder, traditional stove, bird nest - into vivid metaphors to explain the meaning of life as she understood it. This documentary film attempts to present the context of her literature and to project and explore her poetry through the visual medium. The film unravels the interplay between the poet, poetry and the act of living.
The DVD also features littérateur Bhalachandra Nemade and poet Na. Dh. Mahanor speaking about Bahinabai.

That is a wonderful piece of news, Abhay. Have for long admired Bahinabai's poetry. She has a way of saying the most profound thoughts ever so effortlessly. I especially love her poem about the mind, 'man vadhaay vadhaay...'. (Must confess that having said that, so many other of her poems keep flooding the mind to take that place. Difficult to choose). The last documentary on her that I remember was the one with Bhakti Barve several years ago. I look forward to this release.

.... I look forward to this release.

If you are in Pune, look out for Aashay Film CLub's annual Pulotsav event. The documentary is likely to feature in there. Efforts are afoot to screen it in California too. Will write here once it is confirmed.
