I am a big fan of comedy songs. Primarily old ones.. starting with Bhagwan Dada, Johnny Walker, Mehmood, Kishore Kumar and even some Om Prakash and Mohan Choti ones.
New ones are not that great. I am listing some of my favorites here. Start sharing yours.
- Aana meri jaan .. sunday ke sunday - Mere piya gaye rangoon.... - Khush hai zamana aaj pehli tareekh hai - Sar jo tera chakraye...kahe ghabraye - All line clear ...Aage badho.. - Hami kale hain to kya hua...dilwale hain - Int ki dukki paan ka ikka....suno ji yeh calcutta hai - churi ban kanta ban...chamcha nahin ban - Babu samjho ishare...pum pum pum - O bade miyan deewane...
and the list is endless....
Maybe we should share some of these..

"mere piya gaye rangoon wahan se kiya talyphoon tumhari yaad satati hai jiya mein aag lagati hai"
etc.
are we talking intentional or unintentional comedy?
there's every song in "chalti ka naam gaadi"; "c.a.t cat, cat maane billi" from "dilli ka thug"--okay, okay, enough kishore kumar.

I am talking both. Any song that makes you smile BIG or laugh. It could be lyrics or antics of the characters that you remember or music or situation, or all of the above.

Yeah, I thought of starting this thread too when Arnab came up with Comedies. For songs, my list would definitely include the above, but it would perhaps begin with some of these:
meri pyarri bindu (padosan) ek chatur naar (padosan) ham the woh thii aur samaa rangin samajh gaye naa (Chalti ka naam) thande thande paani se nahaanaa chahiye jahaan chaar yaar mil jaayeN pyaar hameN kis moR pe le aayaa paanch rupaiyya barah aana preetam aan milo (angur) meri bhaiNs ko danDaa kyuuN maaraa pag ghungroo baandh Dar lage to gaanaa gaa muttu kullika varigalla
of course there are many more, but meri pyaarii bindu works for me always:

In many ways, when film actor Mahmood passed away recently, I was reminded of just this and the other anecdotes associated with Padosan, as apparently Pancham, Mahmood and KK had these formidable adda sessions where most of the songs were just improvisd, lyrics et al, on the spur of the moment, as it were. This one for sure, and the bits wheere KK crazily badloes the surs [now, how to tell CJji that this bit doesn't quite work with something like "changes the scale" or something like that), making Manna De and Mehmood cry out, ye cheating, ye cheating ji, badal diyaa, sur badal diya.

okay, so i had to go put my "dilli ka thug" dvd in the player. i had forgotten just how many great songs are in that movie. in addition to "c.a.t cat" there's also the very funny "hum to mohabbat karega"--not just the lyrics or kishore kumar's antics but also the faces that nutan (looking impossibly beautiful) makes at him while he chases her around:
"nutan: vah re majnu!
kishore: laila, laila karega...oh lailaaaa, lainlaaaa! (i'm guess majrooh didn't write this last bit) thandi aahen bharega chaahen yeh zamana kahe humko diwana aji hum to mohabbat karega!"

Darn I hate it when this happens - I posted that list and on the way back home remembered just this - hum to mohabbat karega, because the line "jutaa polish karegaa" automatically popped into my head when I somehow found myself mixing this with the more recent
lou ke liye saalaa kuchh bhii karegaa,
written by Abbas Tyrewala (a name which should definitely go into the current lyricists list!)
And yes, it really had to be KK to make Nutan lose all inhibitions in this movie. Never saw her look so unrestrained and having huge fun.
Of the recent ones, there is also Rangila's "aisaa bolegaa saalaa waisaa bolegaa, khullam khulla dil kaa har raaz usko bolegaa" which the earlier one sort of segued into for me, but what was really disappointing was forgetting to include:
joRii hamaarii banegaa kaise jaanii (particularly the angrez accent when he sings:
angrezii desh me itnaa romance hai baahar kaa chhokrii kitnaa advance hai...
Another classic for me is Aby Baby freaking out in Mr Natwarlal:
mere paas aao, mere dosto, ek kissa suno...
nahii bhuultaa main wo jangal kii raat, mujhe yaad hai wo thii mangal kii raat
right up to the ending with, par ye jiinaa bhii koi jiinaa hai lallu?

I know which one you mean, but somehow am unable to recall and this is not going to let me sleep. perhaps it is already in one of the lists above? i think the one you are referring to you is the one that Amitabh does a take off on - with a bow to Mehmood, with the trademark Hitler moustache and rolled-up lungi et al - when he sings a rather lewd (the right word is 'chhichhora'): 'padosan apnii murgii ko rakhnaa sambhaal, meraa murgaa huaa hai diivaana".
talking of real chhichoraa ones, there is also that 'samundar me nahaa ke aur bhii namkeen ho gayii ho" but all those perhaps belong in a different thread all together!

Another one which had me totally enthralled was Aby Baby singing Eer Bir Pattey (the one he got sued for, for the video) and the pity is that since ABCL went bust, this one and the soundtrack of the Bandit Queen (both ABCL releases) also went off the market and is now available largely as MP3, unless pirated copies are around. So when the bigger B, Harivansh Rai, passed away, I spent quite a while trying to transcribe the song (apparently a folk song that the bigger B would recite to his kids) Here it is then, for you all.
ek raheN Eer, Ek raheN Bir, Ek raheN Patte, ek raheN hum

and then there's this immortal classic by bappi lahiri. but maybe it belongs in the food forums?

I am sure not many people have heard this song from some obscure 60s film. Here goes..
Yes ras teri baaton ka Choclate Yeh jadu teri aankhon ka Omelette Yeh ghera teri zulfon ka baby... Dil ko gaya lapet..
Very funny indeed. I remember it hearing it long time back on Radio Sri Lanka. Was not able to find it thereafter.
Love in Simla had quite a few good ones also.
- A baby.. Idhar Aao.. Aa gaya.. ghoom jayo.. ghoom gaya.. Ab kaho kya khaoge.. Jalebi...
- Alif Zibra A.. alif zere ay..
- Gaal gulabi kiske hain.. Nain sharabi kiske hain.. bolo kaun kaun kaun...Shakila!!

I am surprised no one mentioned two of Kishore's songs: -Priye Praneshwari (Hum Tum or Woh) -Zaroorat Hai Zaroorat hai (Man Mauji)..
Both the songs are actually very nice compositions apart from being comical.
I loved Mehmood in "Kabhi agey kabhi pichey" in "Sadhu aur Shaitan".. He was simply superb in this Lamikant-Pyarelal,Rafi song..
And finally I do not want to miss the situationally comical classic from "Kala Bazaar": "Uparwaala jankar anjaan hai"..(Rafi, SD Burman)
This is a dead serious song if you listen to it without knowing the sequence..But when you see the sequence the entire sense that the song portrays changes....

sudip,
can you confirm this for me: i seem to remember a song that used to be on chitrahar every once in a while in the late 80s that featured mehmood (i could be wrong about this) singing "main marne chala hoon", while striding dramatically down the road with a crowd following him. which movie is this? or have i dreamt it?

The film is "Gunahon Ka Devta"
I think Mehmood was a superb dancer. His mudras in Padosan was simply excellent. In fact the way he carried himself in a lungi in two Rafi songs was just too good.. 1. Hum kale hai to kya hua (Gumnaam) 2. Mehbooba banalo mujhe dulha (Sadhu aur Shaitan)

i believe kishore sang this song under s.d burman's direction and the original ("dheere se jaana baghiyan mein") was sung by s.d himself very early in his career. so it may have been a parody aided and abetted by the original singer. don't know about lyricist though.

Yes. It was a parody.. Even "Bhanvra dheere se jaana bagiyan mein" is a parody of the original folk song from East Bengal "Nishitey Jaio Phooloboney re bhamra".. The original lyricist as well as music composer was the poet Jasimuddin from Bangladesh.

i have mentioned this on more than one occasion: there used to be a great song on youtube that was then removed. kishore singing while an older man and his troupe play the music. the real conversation of the song is between kishore and a young woman, doubtless related to the older man, but older man has no idea. everyone keeps making great faces at each other. it would help, of course, if i could remember the name of the movie.
edit: actually, i think it is "naughty boy". of course, youtube has every song from the movie except the one i want. that is, unless it is not in this movie at all!
edit to add: also one of the funniest picturizations in hindi film; how did anyone acting with kishore kumar ever keep a straight face?

arre yaar, baat samjhaa karo-- KK was worried that his songs might be seen as too ganwaar* (all that naansense and shrieking and running around, you know!) and so he put in all that intertextuality. In fact, in one of those otherwise gibberish sounding pieces, he says as much, just before he starts neighing (I think).
