March 1, 2003 was a big day in last world cup -- India v/s Pakistan...with Sachin's master class outplaying Anwar's 100.

and this time it is again a blow for Pakistan with Shoaib and Asif ruled out for world cup. Australia is struggling with Lee being out and losing back to back series one to England and then to NZ. Ozzie bowlers couldn't couldn't defend two 300+ scores.

Though Sachin got the Player of the tournament last time, he hasn't had his hands on the world cup yet and this is his 5th W Cup. His thoughts on mid day

India after badly losing ODI series in WI and SA have just got back to a slightly better rhythm in home ODI series. Let's see how the mystery unfolds...

I'd obtained tickets.. and can't go any more. A pity as I was quite willing to sleep on the beach etc.

I've managed to flog my India tickets (at cost, am no scalper!) but I'd also picked up some Sri Lanka ones (against Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand) in Grenada for mid-April which it looks like I need to push...

Ask me in two days time (Need to get my Grenada friend's house situation clarified)

Tickets in US (via web) sold out within hours. But, in India they were still selling packages with 3-4 game packages (i.e airfare, accomodations, meals and the tickets) as of last week.

Are you heading to the caribbean then?

All-inclusive packages of various sorts are still very much on sale in the UK. Flights for the period were still reasonably priced last I checked too.

Greg Chappell's view on Indian team
QUOTE
And he is learning all the time, he is trusting his instincts better and better all the time, you know, he has had a strong input - for instance, when we came back from the West Indies, one of the areas that we had to change, tackle, was we realized that those overs 20-40, maybe even 15-40 but particularly 20-40, are critical overs in the one day game as it stands today, with the three power plays, and particularly playing on wickets that are less true.
I mean, as we found in the West Indies last year, that were a bit slower, that were holding, the teams that could bat best in that period and bowl best in that period were the ones that would give themselves the best chance. So if you can take wickets in that period it can change the game; if you can not conserve wickets but if you don't lose a lot of wickets, that can
...

But we've got Sehwag and we've got Sachin and Yuvraj and we've got three pretty useful, you know, Sourav is medium pace and we have got three useful spinning options, I mean, Sachin can bowl seam up if he needs to or he can bowl off spinners or he can bowl leg spinners or a combination - very clever.

Sehwag to repay Dravid debt , but there he goes again for a duck chasing mere 85 from WI

Another interesting news -- Sachin, Sourav on Cricket Stock exchange
QUOTE
Every time Sachin Tendulkar hits a half-century in the World Cup — or gets out for a duck — thousands will be anxiously counting how much they stand to win or lose.

And it has nothing to do with bookies.

It was just a matter of time that the world of cricket, flush with money, went corporate. So it should come as no surprise that students of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, have opened a cricket stock exchange.

This virtual bourse, launched on www.cricstock.com, allows you to buy and trade in shares of international cricketers. The fluctuation in share prices reflects the players’ recent performance and how fans feel about them.

I thought Pathan with bowling figures of 3/25, must have bowled well but I was wrong sad.gif

QUOTE
Pathan, inspite of bagging three wickets, did not look too threatening. First, he struggled with his control, then with his pace - he didn't get to 125 kmph, and there was not much swing either. Slowly, with the West Indies batsmen in a generous mood, he began to get his rhythm back. Even if they didn't bent back in, he got a few deliveries to hold up its line and got some to tease the outside edge.

That's right. His bowling did not inspire any confidence whatsoever. Horrendous wides, the likes of which I haven't seen in a while. He appears to have lost it. The batsmen gifted their wickets to him. Patel was the pick of the bowlers.
Vai
QUOTE(peacockeyes @ Mar 9 2007, 12:27 PM) *
Patel was the pick of the bowlers.

among Zaheer, Agarkar and Munaf --- I think Munaf will do much better job in the coming WC matches. His consistency and line and length has been very good except when he was injured in SA.
peacockeyes
Agarkar and even the much-improved Zaheer Khan are essentially inconsistent bowlers. Munaf Patel, when fit, is not inconsistent. Sure he has a bad spell or two, but with a lot of hard work and discipline he can turn out to be India's McGrath (there are marked similarities between the two). I hope he manages his career intelligently because he has it in him to be India's main strike bowler.

Pathan, on the other hand, is a disappointment. Nobody has been able to explain his descent. Is he a victim of over-coaching? He used to bowl in the 130s. He has lost his swing. He has lost his bite. Today, he rarely went over 120, and often times was barely faster than Kumble. No matter how accurate a bowler is (which he is not), with pace like that you can't scare even a schoolboy batting without his abdomen guard.

Sehwag, for all his grand statements of gratitude to Dravid, got out in typical style, chasing a ball outside the off with no foot-movement whatsoever. He has done very well in the past because of his great hand-eye coordination. But with age, this special gift has waned, and his inherently poor technique has been exposed. You could drive a Hummer through the gap between his bat and body. All you have to do these days is to bowl full-length well outside the off or an in-cutter to get him. Even I fancy my chances against him. He might yet prove me wrong, but I think his career is over.

India's main problem is that it's carrying 3 passengers: Sehwag, Pathan and Kumble. And Harbhajan Singh barely makes the mark. Kiran Powar can justifiably feel aggrieved at being left out. Dinesh Mongia ought to have been given more chances in the run-up to the World Cup to really assess his potential; in one of the Champions Trophy games he was the better bowler when compared to Harbhajan Singh.

For those like me who have to follow it by scorecard, the BBC website offers an entertaining summary of what the commentators said. here are some amusing excerpts:

And the whole world comes to a stand still because of the cricket world cup. Could this be the reason why there are fewer posts being made.

btw I do enjoy watching cricket. Had tickets to watch the last day of the Pakistan match last year, the one that did not happen because of a certain incident with a ball.

yes, that was some show of fighting spirit and who knows that may turn out to be miandad 6 off the last ball smile.gif does that still haunt indians? i have heard all sorts of stories and then to see it re-enacted in lagaan. funny thing is it happened when i had lost all interest in cricket and i was totally unaware of things happening then, pakistan winning the world cup, rise tendulkar, wasim and waqar and rise of lara. i missed the best part of cricket, now i am catching up like a child who likes to hear stories of histories turned into mythologies. but youtube is really good source; you catch all sorts of things that those guys did . . .

some of you might know that i worked with the exhibition department at SFPL on putting together a window display on the world cup. hopefully there will a small section culled from an interesting book: Anyone But England by Mike Marqusee (a white guy); display is about racism in cricket from chapter titled The Level Playing Field. the chapter deals with the rise of west indies cricket team their creaming of england 5-0 and what racialist language the entire england bathed in with pride and then against pakistan.

verry bad, moazzam, you had to bring that up. miandad though was even better - last ball of the match. i am very glad i'm not taking exams right now like most of the (high school & college) kids back home. i never understood why the cricketing gods couldn't work it out to accommodate the schedules of their biggest fan base.

I watched a little bit of the Canada-Kenya match today. Canada's Anderson Cummins -- at nearly 41! -- was impressive with the ball. Got prodigious outswing and beat the bat quite often. Had he been luckier, Kenya would have had a harder time beating Canada. According to Cricinfo, he has played for the West Indies. Apparently, when he was passed over for a test match in Barbados, the locals boycotted it, with one banner reading: "No Cummins, no goings". He has got to be the oldest player ever to play in the world cup or even in an ODI.

this match between Ireland and Zimbabwe must have been very interesting. The opening batsman for Ireland stayed right till the end-- and it was a tie!

And here's their next stop on the schedule:

QUOTE
Once the euphoria over a first World-Cup point dies down, Pakistan lie in wait on Saturday, knowing that nothing less than victory will do if they're to progress. Johnston joked that "they might come out and make 500 against us", but he was confident that his squad had the strength to cause one of the great upsets. "If we bowl well up front, who knows?" he said. "We're not particularly worried about their bowling, but we'll have to play out of our skins and they'll need to have an off day."

I watched part of Zim's innings live on tv. Have to say they threw a perfectly decent start away. Matsakinyeri is a capable batsman and by now is fairly experienced and did well to break the shackles in the mid-20s-overs but what was he thinking towards the end?

What the South African Botha is doing in the Irish team is also a bit of a mystery.
Anjali
What do you mean about Matsakinyeri? He was the one who brought the Zimbabwe team to the tie in the first place, was he not? I ask because I have only read the reports-- cannot/shouldn't blink.gif watch the matches here..

As for Botha, I do not remember where but I remember reading that there are more SA cricketers in other teams -- couldn't make the national team in SA hence moved elsewhere?

He did, but then inexplicably slowed down after the 43rd over. Consider they only needed 15 to win at that stage and he was the very well-set batsman.

Just looked it up, Gibbs's wikipedia page has already been edited to reflect this new record!
