About Mahmud Rahman
Mahmud Rahman came of age in what is now Bangladesh and currently lives in Oakland, California. In between - for shorter or longer periods - he found refuge or home in Calcutta, Tulsa, Boston, Detroit, and Providence.
Mahmud's writing life began at twelve when he hammered out - with the help of a jerry-rigged Royal typewriter - six carbon copies of a newspaper and pasted them on the walls of his school in old Dhaka. Since the early 90s, his focus has shifted largely to fiction.
His first story "Felicia" was published in the anthology Contours of the Heart: South Asians map North America. In 2001, "War stories" won First Prize in the Katha Fiction Contest sponsored by India Currents magazine. And in the spring of 2004, he completed an MFA in Creative Writing from Mills College. Today Mahmud is revising a collection of short fiction from which the title story is being published here.
