About S. Shankar

Another Subcontinent is pleased to present an excerpt from S. Shankar's new novel No End to the Journey (Steerforth Press, and available from Amazon.com and at fine bookstores). This feature is comprised of two parts: 1) a chapter from the novel that includes an original translation of the Tamil devotional poem "Alaipaayuthey" and 2) this translation as a standalone piece. Shankar will join the discussion of his work on our forums and talk both about the novel and also about his approach to the translation of this poem contained in it.

S. Shankar is an associate professor of English and the director of the Center for South Asian Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His books include one previous novel, A Map of Where I Live (Heinemann, 1997), a book of literary criticism, Textual Traffic: Colonialism, Modernity and the Economy of the Text (SUNY Press), and a co-edited collection, Crossing into America: The New Literature of Immigration (New Press). His stories and poetry have appeared in numerous literary magazines. His translation of Komal Swaminathan's Tamil play Thaneer, Thaneer (Water!) was published by Seagull Press in India and Asian Theatre Journal in the US. He lives in Hawaii.

This feature continues Another Subcontinent's expansion of our mission, to feature not only new writing by South Asian writers and about South Asia, but to also promote and support writing by published writers who we would like to help bring to an even larger audience. This has, of course, been our approach with visual artists from the very beginning. Another Subcontinent does not benefit financially from featuring published writers, and has no relationship of any kind with featured authors' publishers.
